Things That Make Me Go 'Hmmmm'

Do you ever see something, or experience something that you absolutely do. not. understand? Do you ever scratch your head and wonder 'why is the grass green?', or 'how do they get the caramel inside the Caramilk bar?', or 'what the heck is that person thinking?' No? Just me? Okay, awkward, moving on... but this is today's prompt. Things that make you go 'hmmm'. I want to know what kind of things make you wonder/think/ponder/question/etc.

Warning: This post contains 'explicit' language. Please do not be offended.
Mom, Dad, Aunti Jay... I'm sorry in advance for this...

    Swearing

I absolutely do not understand swearing. Why is 'Fuck' a bad word? Who decided this? Why is it wrong to say 'bullshit' or 'asshole'? I was raised in a Christian family and grew up going to church every Sunday. It was taught to us at a young age that you do not say fuck because it's such a terrible word... but why? It's not in the bible, and it's never been officially passed forward by God (at least not to my knowledge - if I'm wrong, please point me in the direction of this info) that you can't swear. But who also decided that "fuck" was "fuck"? What if "fridge" was a bad word and we called a fridge a "fuck"? This is something that my papa and I used to talk about all the time because we just couldn't understand it. Door could be a swear word instead of meaning 'door', but no... it's just a 'door' because somebody said so. Yep, this one just won't ever make sense to me.

When I swear, I don't do it to mean offense to anyone, honestly. Sometimes I just say words that I don't even mean to say and then I feel terrible that I have 'sinned', but why? why is this a sin? Lets just agree to disagree if you think that fuck is a bad word.

    Flight Costs

This one is absurd to me. It costs just as much to fly from Vancouver to Halifax (domestic flight here people, NOT LEAVING THIS COUNTRY) as it costs to fly to Europe. That's not okay. To fly home for a week to visit family and friends, I could spend the same amount of money and take a trip to Hawaii, anywhere in the US, or EUROPE. No bueno. I don't understand how Air Canada can get away with charging an arm and a leg to fly within its own country.

    Batman

There's not enough time in the day to discuss this one. I just don't get why Batman is a superhero. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate him... I enjoy the movies and the story lines (for the most part), but he is NOT a superhero. Superman is a hero, Batman is just a super rich vigilante with too much time on his hands at night. Want to know how Superman knows there is trouble (and FLIES to rescue whoever is in danger)? HE JUST KNOWS. Want to know how Batman knows? The commissioner shines a light in the sky. This is NOT convenient if Batman is needed between the hours of 6:00am-9:00pm because the sky is still too bright...
Justin and Juliette are both going to kill me for this one. Oh well.

    Sidewalk Hogs

I really really really don't understand people that walk down the sidewalk like this and DON'T MOVE. If I wanted to play Red Rover on my walk to work, I would go back to Elementary School. I'll never, ever, ever, understand the sidewalk hogs.

    Insomnia

How come it takes me hours to fall asleep some nights? How come I toss and turn and turn and toss until I'm practically begging for it to be 6:00am so I can just get up and start getting ready for the day. Some nights are pure torture (seriously). But how come I can't wake up in the morning? I can't fall asleep and I can't wake up - it's kind of problematic for me. Also, how come on weekdays I feel as though I could sleep until 10:00am-11:00am but on weekends my eyes pop open at 6:30/7:00am and I'm basically awake for the day?

    Canadian Prices

I don't get it. I really don't. Why does everything in Canada cost SO MUCH MORE than it does in the US? Especially alcohol. How come the Americans can have 3 buck chuck, but we have to pay $15 for the same crap wine? No bueno. <-- Look, I spoke Spanish, can I have the cheap alcohols now please?

    5-Day Work Weeks

I really really really want to know who decided that out of a 7-day week, we should have to work 5 of those days. Everyone preaches about work-life balance, but I spend 5 days per week at the office, and only 2 days per week enjoying the 'life' side of the whole work-life balance thing. That ain't right... we're doing it wrong.

Okay, I think that's all I've got. Ciao for now.

HA! Sidewalk hogs...YES. They are the worst. It happens here in Vegas all the time, and it's annoying as all hell.

I agree with so many of these things! I think we should work four on and three off. The workday wouldn't be that much longer by comparison and you'd get a whole extra day off.

But seriously with the flight costs. Attention airlines, I need to fly to Canadialand to try poutine. And also to see Faith. Again, #priorities. ;) Also I have a solution for Canada’s high prices – move to Texas, we have a relatively low cost of living, especially if you move into my house. (That sounded way less murdery in my head)

My friend and I were just talking about the whole "bad words" thing. I kind of think that it more depends on what you're doing by saying it. Like, if I say "Fuck you" to my mom or something, that's obviously a problem. So yeah, more of the effect it has on someone than the actual word itself . . . I think? But yeah, that one always gets me!

I agree with almost everything, the sidewalk hogs, that walk at a backwards snail pace, just no move out of my way. The work thing, ya no, that gif is me everyday of the week. I wish we could just work 4 on 3 off that would be great. Ah airfare, total bullshit, I am booking flights for vacation and it's like here is my kidney for a return flight home. k thanks! UGH.

There is not much for me to say other than I agree with every single thing you wrote. Yes! To every single thing!

Fact: little kid swears are better than adult swears. Sometimes I'll look at some art and be all, "Man. That looks like doo-doo." People react better to it, too. They all, "Oh shit, he said 'doo-doo'. Must be serious."

Ok ready for a history lesson. My dad (and I) teaches history and like a year ago he gave me some advice. He said you have to share some things with your students that will entertain them. Like this......he then proceeded to tell me where the word FUCK came from. He said that in colonial times when people got in trouble they would be put in those wooden head things (that Heath Ledger is put in at the end of A Knights Tale) I can't think of the proper name. Any way they would write the persons crime on the wood above their head and if a woman (or man) committed adultery they would write "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" FUCK. How and why it got to be used in 1. a graphic way and 2. a kind of a crap kinda way I'm not sure. BUT that is where it originated. Ok history lesson over...sorry for the novel!

Oh and I agree with all your hmms too! K Bye! :)

Yes. To all of this, actually. The domestic flight prices make me crazy. Getting from Northern BC to Vancouver (which would be about $75 in gas, for my car) costs $280(ish) on a really good day. For a 45min flight. It's maddening. Flying to the East Coast is ridiculous. Perhaps They should consider the tourism costs of this debacle. Anyway. Yes. OH! And the five-day work week, too. Maddening.

All of this. YES.
