Stop, Collaborate, and Quit Caffeine

Caffeine. Glorious, and awful caffeine.

I don't like coffee, and I refuse to drink it - but I'm kind of addicted to caffeine. Energy/fat burning pills, double shots of espresso, diet coke, RedBull, iced tea, or frappucinos with added shots of espresso. No coffee, but I definitely consume my fair share of caffeine on a daily basis. It may or may not be problematic... So I've decided to cut back. By cutting back, I mean cutting it out cold turkey. It's hard.

After thinking about why I shouldn't have any more caffeine in my system, I decided to list a few tell-tale signs that you should quit.

A few signs that you should give up caffeine (or at least cut back):

  • You can't function without it.
  • Driving to work. Paperwork at the office. Afternoon Errands.
If you need coffee just to be able to function and perform these tasks, it might be time to check yourself.

  • If you can't sleep at night, but crash in the afternoon.
  • If you're unable to fall asleep at night, it's probably because you consumed too much coffee all day. The worst part is when you crash in the afternoon, you need a pick-me-up... this is not a good idea.

  • If you need a fix so badly, that you drink straight from the pot.
  • Do I need to elaborate? No. If you're drinking straight from the coffee pot, it's time to back up.

  • When you start taking your shots of espresso in the classiest way you can.
  • I shoot my espresso the same way I shoot my tequila. Quick, I make a disgusted face, and then chase it with something. When you start raising your pinky while you sip your espresso, yeahhh you should probably just go ahead and stop. I may or may not have gotten to this point.

  • If you're getting heart palpitations.
  • Seriously. Just quit. If you're starting to get heart palpitations from all the caffeine, it's your body's way of telling you to CALM DOWN.. So don't drink another sip of that coffee, espresso, diet coke, or RedBull.

Well, here we are, friends. These reasons that I've listed, above, are exactly why I'm quitting cutting back on caffeine. I can't say quit, because, well, I just can't commit to that entirely. Yesterday was my first 'caffeine free' day, and I caved a drank half a can of diet coke at 10:30 to make my headache go away.

And now, because I have absolutely zero caffeine in my system, excuse me while I go pass out.

I used to be addicted to SF energy drinks (they were so helpful in energizing me for workouts - as well as continuing to help me make it through my long work days) and I swear, when I cut them out, I felt like crapola for a week straight. I had a headache for a week straight. I was absooooolutely miserable. I don't know how I made it out alive.

It was so bad that after that week, I didn't even want to LOOK at coffee. Or an energy drink. Or really anything that contained caffeine.

So I totally feel your pain. But good luck! You can do it! You'll feel a lot better afterwards....and definitely save some money!!

You are a strong woman! I've cut back on caffeine before, but never cut it completely out.

sometimes if i don;t have a cup/can in the car, my hand keeps reaching for the cup holder anyway, like a phantom limb. I have cut down tremendously but still dream/wish/hope for a constant IV caffeine drip

Pretty sure I would die.

Just shrivel up in a ball and cease to exist.

You are a brave woman!

I'm only at the #1 stage. I can't function in the morning without my coffee. My other really bad one - I get headaches if I don't get it by a certain time. Eek!

I went for a few years without caffeine, and honestly I didn't notice much of a difference. It's so strange how it can affect individuals in such different ways!

When I got home from work yesterday, I had an awful headache. Nothing a nice, cold 20 oz diet coke wouldn't fit right? So I drank one. I laid in bed last night tossing and turning, unable to sleep, most likely because of the diet coke.

I made a decision last night to cut back/eliminate caffeine, and then I read your blog post. I was motivated and inspired that you were quitting too.

And then my 9 month old and I had an all night pajama party. Mom fail.

Baaaahahah! PREACH! I gave it up a few weeks ago, too. I was literally drinking at least 6 Coke Zeros a day on average. Pretty sure I didn't have blood left, just Coke Zero in my veins. I'm on the water wagon now and only have pop once or twice a week if that. It's HARD! God speed, good woman!

I'm right there with you buuuuuuuuut I'm still in the self-denial 'it's-not-that-bad' stage. I have to get my cup in the morning because a) I can't function, b) I get killer headaches, c) I get the mad shakes and d) I turn into a bitch if I don't get it by a certain time. Yeah, I'm THAT person. Haha. Maybe I'll cut back once the college year is over. Maybe.
